February 11 Wellness Dinner: Chinese 5 element dinner
Join the Open Kitchen for a guided tour of winter foods viewed through the lens of the Chinese 5 element theory of food. This ancient tradition teaches how to balance the body through nutrition based on the five elements: fire, earth, metal, water, wood. The winter season is represented by water, so we will focus on spicy, hearty meals to bolster up the human body system during winter time. CLICK HERE FOR THE MENU
Throughout this 4 course meal Dr. Elise Wong from Essential Family Medicine will educate guests on the lore of the Chinese approach to a balanced diet. Each plate is minutely designed by Chef Abby Fammartino (in a gluten, soy and dairy free kitchen) using ingredients suggested by Dr. Wong. In essence, each plate will be the study guide of this Eastern dining workshop focused on “Food as Medicine.”
Each phase elements has a human organ system that relates to it. For example the Kidneys and Bladder are symbolic of winter. The ancient Chinese physicians believed that humans should follow nature and that we should change our lifestyle to be in accordance with the season that we are in. Therefore the best time to nourish these organ systems is during the season that they relate to. So in winter we should be eating foods that improve the health of the Kidney and Bladder.–Dr. Elise Wong
